The strategically located facility near the D11 motorway will ensure sufficient capacity for PPL customers and faster connection to the PPL transport network throughout the year and in high season. It will also improve accessibility and connectivity to DHL’s European network and other foreign markets.

“The convenient location of the transshipment facility with good access to infrastructure and transport connections to the D11 motorway is an advantage that multiplies the capacity of PPL’s transport network and helps to optimise our distribution routes,” explains PPL CZ CEO Petr Horák, adding that the new central transshipment facility, unlike the regional operations, ensures efficient interconnection of all points in the network and complements the only current central transshipment facility near Prague, in Říčany - Jažlovice.

“The new operation, which is unparalleled in the Czech Republic in terms of size, capacity and technologies used, also fulfils our green strategy in terms of environmental impact and sustainability. In addition, by shortening the travel distances between our distribution centres and customers we will also effectively reduce CO2 emissions,” says David Voznička, PPL CZ’s Chief Operating Officer.

The new center will be operated by a team of 26 employees, 15 dispatchers, 3 coordinators, plus an additional 100 agency operations staff. A fully automated line with crossbelt sorter technology, which sorts shipments using more than 1,000 sorting trolleys compared to the traditional sliding shoe system, will help it achieve the highest possible operational efficiency. “It is the introduction of the latest technology that distinguishes the PPL CZ depot in Hradec Králové from all other transshipment facilities where the classic sliding shoe system is used. Two automated sorting lines with a total sorter length of 850 m enable high-speed sorting of tens of thousands of parcels per hour as well as leaflet bags and bulky national and international shipments. The sorting units can handle up to 500,000 parcels in 24 hours,” explains Horák.

The new technology and location of the HUB will help to speed up sorting, reduce transport time, increase the comfort and speed of parcel delivery to addresses and efficiently sort parcels going to Parcelshops and Parcelboxes. Thanks to the sorting centre’s sufficient capacity, it will be possible to expand the second, afternoon delivery wave across the country. The automated line supports five-sided shipment reading, dynamic weighing, sorting and measuring of shipments. “The new transshipment HUB has a control centre equipped with the latest telecommunications equipment, which will ensure the security and stability of all systems and continuous monitoring of client shipments,” adds Voznička.

The new HUB has a total of 20 entry and 50 exit gates equipped with conveyor technology with universal and versatile uses for domestic and foreign customers. Compared to the Jažlovice transshipment facility, the new HUB in Hradec Králové differs not only in the use of sorting technology, but also in the total area, which is twice as large. The area of the complex is 46,000 sqm, of which the large warehouse itself occupies over 10,000 sqm.

Dopravní noviny: Night excursion of logistics students to the new HUB of PPL CZ

The cooperation of the Department of Logistics with PPL CZ is not only about practical familiarization of students with the issues of KEB services by organizing professional lectures and seminars or elaboration of company topics for qualification theses. The most popular with students are always excursions to real operations.
